I started DJing around 1995 and continue to do so today, but more for fun. I have dj'd at some good Detroit Raves and some bad ones, a lot of bars, clubs and of course house and after parties
Once I left Detroit and went to college I continued to dj a bit at a lot of college parties and got a couple good rave gigs back in Detroit, but mainly did it for fun.
When everybody was spinning techno, I was spinning dark garage house or hardcore acid. Once I moved to New York City I began to just dj at a few bars and at home.
While in college I began to make music. I used a lot of computer based programming like Reason and Rebirth. I would build custom Rebirth kits with samples from records and use the sequence with the built in 303 to add some flare. I would then put it all together in programs like Cubase or Cool Edit Pro.
I then started adding hardware based solutions to the mix like Roland MC-307 and the Akai MPC. Because I grew up with a drum set and always loved and was good at the drums I added a Roland V drum set to the array of toys. This has a midi interface and can control the rest of my equiment.
I dont take the time to sit down and slowly create my music. That is why it sounds very dirty. I pretty much make it in one or two cuts, usually a song will take around 8 hours. I then immediately record it not using song mode, but actually building it while I am recording it. That is why the songs I make with the V drums sound very basic. Well it is me experimenting with controlling numerous sounds and making a beat with drum stiucks on the fly. It is really cool stuff, but doesnt sound produced enough for most.
Because of my DJ past I do almost all of my songs live. Not much editing. This makes for a great live show, which is what you hearin. Most of the songs are made with V drums, Akai MPC, Cubase, Roland 307, Computer 303, Rebirth, Reason, Cool Edit pro, etc.
Take a listen, don't expect a boring production - Expect it raw.
